Foundation Schools

The process of applying to foundation schools is competitive and will take some time. You will start by filling out a similar application form to the regular foundation programme plus an additional section which demonstrates your academic achievements to date.

Choosing AFP Foundation Schools

This is where it pays to have a body of research behind you or even some published material. If you have none of these it’s worth trying to get something into a reputable publication to demonstrate your academic aptitude.

Before applying you will need to choose a location to complete the training. These take place at an Academic Unit of Application (AUoA), which is normally a university, and each applicant is restricted to just two choices. These will vary in terms of their nature and focus.

However, in most cases, the first year will focus more on clinical skills while the second will see an increased emphasis on academic skills training. There may be a four-month academic placement during the second year while others may come with additional academic activities during the first year.

Below you can see a table of the number and type of programmes available for 2018-19, as well as interview dates.

Applications

It pays to research the structure of the different AFPs on offer to choose the one which is best for your needs. The programme is normally carried out by a university which gives you access to resources such as libraries, teaching, methodology, computer rooms and other facilities. This can also provide an opportunity to get involved in a teaching role.

To apply, you will need to complete an online application for via Oriel and will be expected to sit the Situational Judgement Test. Your score on the SJT will not be used to allocate you to an AUoA, but it will affect your chances of receiving an offer to the AFP.

You will then go through an interview process after which you will hopefully receive an offer to at least one of your AUoAs. If not, you can return to the FP process.

The application process is constantly evolving so it pays to consult the AFP website before moving forward.
